![]() (I know some people are very moved by Snape's story, and Ron might have a few supporters, too.)Īlso, it seems like the Strike series is developing its characters at a slower pace than in the HP series, which I hope means a much longer series. It's just not possible to please all of the readers all of the time. I suppose it's inevitable that the Strike characters will be a mixed bag as well. OTOH, I was never very sympathetic to Snape's story arc, and I ended up disappointed to learn that after years of marriage to Hermione, Ron can still act like a jerk. I remember how surprised I was to discover the real Sirius Black and how satisfying it was to see Neville Longbottom develop into a true hero. Obviously, Strike and Robin are "round" characters, but who else do you think has been developing or might soon be due for some change? Do you think we'll see any of the younger characters grow into surprisingly different teens or adults? And who would you prefer to keep as "flat" characters, either because they don't interest you, because they might change for the worse, or because they serve the best purpose just the way they are? (I'm thinking Barclay and Polworth here.) By contrast, round characters are complex and undergo development, sometimes sufficiently to surprise the reader. ![]() The internet defines round and flat characters this way:įlat characters are two-dimensional in that they are relatively uncomplicated and do not change throughout the course of a work. ![]()
